PROBATE DOCUMENTS

Probate material as a genealogical source is of great significance to any research project and often the genealogical information contained within a will or other probate document can be instrumental to the continuance of research when other records such as those of the parish may be lacking.

The vast majority of wills, letters of administration, probate inventories and other related documents together also with the majority of marriage bonds and allegations for Yorkshire are housed at The Borthwick Institute of Historical Research right here in the city of York. This great repository of Yorkshire probate material and indeed the majority of probate material for Northern England is a mere five minutes walk from our research premises and is a constant source of research matter for all of our client research projects.

OUR IN-HOUSE SERVICE

Even though the Borthwick Institute is virtually on our doorstep it does not preclude us from extending our policy of providing an in-house service to include even this class of record. We have at our disposal the entire available published probate and marriage bond indexes that over time have been created for much of the document holdings of the Borthwick Institute. Therefore, for the most part the existence of a will or other probate document can be identified using our in-house facility and the resulting document simply obtained directly from the Borthwick Institute.
